“O sing unto the Lord. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” These are the guiding principles of the Sanctuary choir. In contrast to a culture where performers entertain the audience seated before them, the Sanctuary Choir is mindful that we sing before a congregation of listeners with whom together–singers with their voices and listeners with their hearts–we offer sacrifices of praise to our true audience, the King of Kings.
“Honour and majesty are before God; strength and joy are in God’s place.” Since God has promised to inhabit the peoples’ praises, we strive to offer our humble gifts, claiming that promise, knowing that we all have come to hear God’s voice, to feel God’s presence, to be set ablaze by God’s awesome holiness, and to rest in the peace of God’s bountiful forgiveness. From Bach to Britten, from Monteverdi to Molly Ijames, from Baroque double choirs to Russian liturgical music to spirituals to Craig Courtney’s contemporary anthems, we reflect the variety of our God with our musical choices while always offering only the finest music we are able to sing…”for the Lord is great and greatly to be praised.”
