Contemplative Prayer

  • Third Tuesday monthly, 7:00-8:30 pm
  • Location: Parlor

Psalm 45 says “Be still and know that I am God.”  But how often do we take the time to do that?  The Contemplative Prayer service at Providence, the third Monday monthly from 7:00-8:30 pm, is a drop-in service in the Parlor where people gather for spiritual nurture fostered through scripture and other inspirational sources, prayer, silence, reflections, and sharing. The service closes with a circle of intercessory prayer.

We practice many types of prayer: adoration, confession, thanksgiving, intercession and petition. All of these prayers involve our speaking to God. But if communication is a two-way process, a sender and a receiver, a speaker and a listener, when in our communications with God do we listen?

Contemplative prayer is a focused quiet time when we strive to let go of all concerns, thoughts, and ideas for the purpose of simply being open to the presence and love of God. What if God speaks to our hearts in ways that our intellect can never understand or explain? But if our minds are so busy with all the details of life, business, worship, family, when will we ever be aware of or open to God’s quiet stirrings?
