Why Mission? A full Christian life--indeed, a full human life--includes prayer and worship, community and fellowship with others, the intellectual challenge of study, and service to those in need. Your spiritual growth is directly related to your investment of yourself in each of these areas. A mature Christian's faith is grounded in prayer, supported by knowledge and understanding, lived in community, and realized in service. "Realized" means made real. Serve dinner to a homeless man; deliver a crib to a family without means to buy one; repair a hole in the floor for a destitute homeowner; sing to a nursing home resident; pipe running water to an orphanage. When you enter into the reality of a life very different from your own, you will be challenged to see the world with new understanding, and your faith will grow and change. Mission means acting to bring the world closer to the Kingdom of God. The Mission Committee at Providence continually seeks to identify the gaps that exist between our present reality and God's vision of the world, and enable members of the congregation to give of their time and talents to help narrow those gaps. The committee tries to maintain a balance of local and far-flung projects; short-term and long-term commitments; activities for all ages; and a variety of interest areas. We hope that in perusing the mission opportunities listed, you will feel God's call to serve others as a member of the Providence community.
